History of The Connecticut "G" Scalers

In early 1993 after building and operating a

Garden Railroad for five years, the Edgertons

(Elaine, George and Elizabeth-Ann) decided to

see if any other citizens in Connecticut that

were involved in the hobby wanted to organize

a Garden Railroad Club. Thanks to the three

(at that time) Garden railroad Magazines very

nice ads were published to announce that any

persons interested could contact the Edgertons.

On May 16, 1993, approximately twelve persons

got together and formed the Connecticut "G" Scalers.

Because we did not know at that time if there was

sufficient interest in our state to warrant a club of

this nature it was agreed that the club would be

informal. Those present agreed that any person or

couple interested in Large Scale Trains whether

the owned a Garden or Indoor "G" railroad, were

collectors, etc. would be welcome. The Club

would be non-profit and would have no "Formal" rules for attendance. Only rule was that each member, or family, should donate a minimum dues annually to cover the costs of a monthly newsletter, etc.

By December 1993 the club had 33 members and

seemed to be well on the way to success. At that

meeting members also were discussing building

"Modules" for displaying at train shows, etc. By March 1994 module standards had been written and on May 15, 1994 (Club's First Birthday) the involved members modules were displayed at a Train & Flower show in Goshen CT. Not bad when you consider the module idea was hatched in Dec 93 and the modular display built & shown within five months.

Through the years the Club has grown with each new member bringing his or hers (Theirs) diverse talents, ideas, personalities, etc. to the Club. In 2004 we are still an informal club. However, when major decisions have to be made, the general membership is solicited for their opinions and an informal "Board of Directors" made up of the more "Active" club members makes the final decision.

So far, this informal approach has seemed to be

working quite well as every Club member has a

chance to input if they so desire. At this time, the

Club has over one hundred members with some from NY State, Mass. and Canada.
